I was born in Woodford in 1953, one of five sons and studied on the Art and Design Foundation course at Loughton College, going on to study a Fine Art Degree at Portsmouth Polytechnic from 1977-1980, then completing an MA in Printmaking at Chelsea College of Art in 1981.

I completed a Doctorate in Fine Art at the University of East London in 2012 and live and work in East London.

I have recently retired as a senior lecturer in the Art and Design subject area at the University of East London, where I taught on the Illustration and Professional Doctorate in Fine Art programmes.

In 2006 I instigated the AVA Drawing Research Group its aim, to bring together the diversity of drawing practice found in a School that included: Architecture, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography, Moving Image, Animation, Illustration, Digital Media, Fashion Design and Textiles.
